Rasheed Binns pleads guilty to killing man at Mount Vernon taxi stand
A man who fatally stabbed the brother of a cab company owner at a Mount Vernon taxi stand last summer pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree manslaughter.
Rasheed Binns, 42, admitted that he stabbed 56-year-old Robert Higgins at New Line Taxi, 72 East Third Street, late on July 22, 2022.
Acting state Supreme Court Justice James McCarty did not specify the length of the prison term Binns would face but said he would sentence Binns to between 10 and 12 years depending on his level of remorse and the details of a pre-sentence report.
Binns and the mother of his child, Leah Guy, went to New Line to get a cab that night. Higgins, whose brother was an owner of the business, was sitting in the back when an argument began between him and Binns. Higgins was stabbed once and Binns and Guy left.

Authorities have not said what led to the fatal confrontation.
Binns was arrested on the manslaughter charge a little over 24 hours later. Guy was also arrested, charged with hindering prosecution and tampering with physical evidence after she allegedly hid Binns' clothing in her bag and put the bag in her car.
Her case is still pending.
Because of prior felony convictions, none violent, Binns faced a minimum of eight years in prison and a maximum of 25 years. Assistant District Attorney Catalina Blanca Buitrago said prosecutors were seeking a 14-year prison term. Binns' lawyer, Joanna Karlitz, asked the judge for 10 years.
Binns was returned to the Westchester County Jail to await sentencing, which McCarty scheduled for Oct. 5.
